Mechanism of action

Also known as · MoA · MOA · mode of action

The molecular pathway by which a drug produces its therapeutic effect.

Includes target identity (receptor, enzyme, ion channel), binding mode (agonist, antagonist, allosteric), and downstream signaling. A plausible mechanism is necessary but not sufficient for efficacy — many compounds with elegant mechanisms fail in clinical trials.
