Antagonist

A molecule that binds to a receptor without activating it, blocking the receptor from being activated by its natural agonist.

Antagonists are used to inhibit pathological signaling — for example, GLP-1 receptor antagonists are used in research to dissect the contribution of endogenous GLP-1 to glucose homeostasis.
