Molecular information

Type
Acetylated 28-AA peptide · immunomodulator · enhances T-cell maturation

Thymosin alpha-1 (TA-1) is a synthetic 28-amino-acid acetylated peptide, identical to a natural product of the thymus. Marketed by SciClone under Zadaxin and authorised in roughly 35 countries (China, Italy, several LATAM and Middle Eastern markets) — but not by the EMA or FDA.

Authorised uses (where applicable)

  • Chronic hepatitis B / C — adjunct to standard antiviral therapy
  • Vaccine adjuvant in immunocompromised populations
  • Severe sepsis — investigational in some markets

Why we grade it B

Multiple Phase III trials in chronic viral hepatitis support the immunomodulator claim, and ~35 national regulatory authorisations validate the safety record. But the EMA file is not active and the trial evidence in EU populations is thin. Grade B reflects a credible but non-EU-authorised peptide.
