§ GLOSSARY · Clinical trial

Primary endpoint

Also known as · primary outcome · PO

The principal outcome measure used to evaluate whether a clinical trial succeeded or failed.

Specified before the trial begins and registered in advance with ClinicalTrials.gov or EUDRA-CT to prevent outcome switching. Secondary endpoints provide supplementary evidence but cannot substitute for a failed primary endpoint.
